MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR:  SEASON PROGRAM 2009

The fire that destroyed the Red Barn Theatre shocked us all.  But when the flames were extinguished our creative spirits were not, and so in true theatrical tradition our journey continues.

This season has become all the more important to us all.  Many have worked tirelessly to insure that our season would be saved and that the legacy of The Red Barn Theatre would endure.   Our new temporary home at The Stephen Leacock Theatre presents all sorts of creative challenges and opportunities.

Our Diamond Anniversary is a major milestone and we are so pleased to have attracted such celebrated guest artists as Fiona Reid, Jonathan Crombie, Sue Miner and Louise Pitre.

We open with Tennessee Williams poetic memory play, The Glass Menagerie.Featured in the Red Barn’s first season, this classic will touch and resonate with our audiences today as it did six decades ago.

The Melville Boys, our second production, is one of the great Canadian comedies of all time.  Norm Foster’s writing is at its finest here as he weaves a story that is both very funny and very moving.

Our musical offering The Fantasticks is an extraordinary example of imaginative theatrical story telling. With memorable characters, sparkling dialogue and songs that have become standards such as “Soon Its Gonna Rain” and “Try to Remember”, it is not surprising that this gem has become the longest running musical of all time.

At the end of the summer, we look to the future with Harvest and must marvel at Ken Cameron’s inventive and hilarious writing style.  This comedy, with is controversial subject matter is one of the hottest new scripts from one of Canada’s new generation of fine playwrights.

Our season will also include the comic talents of Yuk Yuk’s and The Second City.  The summer will elegantly conclude with a gala fundraiser starring Louise Pitre and John Alcorn in Concert at the brand new Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.

Thank- you to everyone who has supported the Red Barn Theatre including our Sponsors, Donors, Volunteers, Board of Directors and Friends in the community.  Your loyal support has been very appreciated.

Onwards!
